“Lightfall: The Girl & the Galdurian” (Book One) by Tim Probert

On the planet Irpa, light only reaches a few places, and everything beyond them is darkness. Deep in this world stands the Salty Pig’s House of Tonics & Tinctures, home of the wise Pig Wizard and his adopted granddaughter, Bea.

One day, Bea meets Cad, a Galdurian, and Galdurians are supposed to be extinct. Cad needs help finding his people. Bea needs to find her grandfather. Together, these two unlikely friends set out on a quest that is way above their pay grade, and creatures in the dark are already following them.

This is a full-color graphic novel with cinematic, painted art, packed with eccentric characters, funny moments, and a cliffhanger ending. Kirkus gave it a starred review, and fans of “Amulet” will feel right at home. It’s written for readers about eight to twelve.
