"The Fledgling" by Jane Langton

A Newbery Honor Book, 1981

Georgie Dorian is a small girl in Concord, Massachusetts, who is sure she can fly. When a Canada goose called the Goose Prince appears at Walden Pond and offers to teach her, her dream starts to come true. But a hunter obsessed with the Goose Prince is closing in, and Georgie has to choose how far she’ll go to protect her friend.

It’s a gentle, lyrical story of friendship, nature, and wonder, written for readers about eight to twelve. It’s the fourth Hall Family Chronicle, though it can be read on its own.
