He is joined on his quest by his 'Aunt Pol' and his grandfather, who turn out to be the ancient sorcerers Polgara and Belgarath, respectively. And no fantasy hero's quest would be complete without a proper heroine for him to fall in love with -- the Imperial Princess Ce'Nedra. Not bad for a simple farm boy...

David Eddings, who had been writing in the traditional adventure and thriller genres, was inspired to create a fantasy series when he saw how many times J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings series had been reprinted.
