Stellaluna is a baby fruit bat who becomes separated from her mother when they are attacked by an owl. Unable to fly, Stellaluna falls from the sky and lands in a bird nest with three baby birds. Mama Bird adopts this strange new baby, but makes her live by bird rules -- eating bugs, sleeping at night, and sleeping in the nest, not hanging by her feet like a proper bat. Stellaluna and her bird siblings grow and learn to fly. The young bat flies far ahead and ends up spending the night in a tree far, far away from the nest. Because she promised not to hang by her feet, she sleeps hanging by her thumbs. She is awakened by a group of bats who have landed to see why she is hanging 'upside down'. Stellaluna tells them her story, including the attack by the owl. One of the bats looks closely at Stellaluna and realizes she is her long-lost baby. Stellaluna is thrilled to be reunited with her mother and to fly at night and eat the delicious fruit her mother finds, but she cannot just fly off with the bats without telling her bird family what's happened. When the bats and birds meet, Stellaluna realizes that while she has much in common with the birds, they are still very different. But it doesn't mean they can't be friends!
The last two pages of the book contain lots of fascinating facts about bats that make Stellaluna seem that much more real.Â
The dust jacket has some slight damage, but the book is in otherwise good condition.Â
