Into the Storm by Taylor Anderson is the first book in the military science fiction and alternate history Destroyermen series, published in June 2008 by Roc Books.

Plot Overview

The Departure: During World War II in 1942, the vintage WWI-era U.S. Navy four-stacker destroyer USS Walker (under the command of Lieutenant Commander Matthew Patrick Reddy) is retreating from pursuing Japanese warships.

The Transition: Desperate for cover, Reddy steers the Walker into a violent, unnatural squall.

The Alternate Earth: The ship emerges into an alternate version of Earth where human beings never evolved, familiar geography (such as the islands of Indonesia) is altered, and prehistoric creatures like dinosaurs roam the land while monstrous predators fill the seas.

The Conflict: The crew discovers two sentient, intelligent species engaged in a brutal war: the cat-like, peaceful Lemurians and the aggressive, reptilian Grik. Armed with 20th-century steam power and modern naval weaponry, the crew of the Walker must choose a side—an alliance that threatens to dramatically shift the balance of power on this new planet.
