“Phoebe and Her Unicorn” by Dana Simpson

Phoebe has a very ordinary day until she skips a rock across a pond and accidentally hits a unicorn in the face.

It turns out the unicorn is Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, who is vain, dramatic, and far too fancy to be impressed by anybody. But because of the rock, she owes Phoebe one wish, and Phoebe uses it to make Marigold her “obligational best friend.” What follows is a funny, sweet, sparkly friendship between two very different characters who were both a little lonely.

It’s a comic-style illustrated book, with clean panels and a lot of humor, written for ages seven to twelve. Reviewers have compared Phoebe to Calvin and Charlie Brown, and it’s a great pick for fans of Babymouse. It’s the first of the Heavenly Nostrils Chronicles.
