A collection of three novels by Gary Paulsen, two of which -- Dogsong and Hatchet -- are Newbery Honor books. 

Tracker is the story of John Borne, a thirteen-year-old boy who has always loved the time spent hunting with his grandfather. But when the older man battles cancer, John must hunt alone for the first time so that the family can have meat for the long Minnesota winter. As he sets off on his own, John tracks a special doe who leads him toward a different goal, toward a peace with death.

Dogsong follows Russell Susskit on his epic journey of self-discovery. The fourteen-year-old Eskimo boy feels out of place in a world becoming more and more modern. Looking to the past for guidance, Russell borrows the village shaman's sled team and sets out into icy tundra and into another time.

In Hatchet, Brian Robeson is thinking only about his parents' recent divorce and his knowledge of The Secret. It's a knowledge that haunts him even after the single-engine plane carrying him to visit his father crashes in the Canadian forest. With only a hatchet, a parting gift from his mother, to help him survive, Brian faces the wilderness alone. Paulsen recounts this fifty-four-day ordeal in vividly realistic scenes of struggles that both prompt and evoke a boy's coming of age.
