If you remember where you were on September 11, this novel will speak to you with care and respect.
Susan Meissner weaves two stories a century apart, linked by a scarf with a marigold pattern. In 1911, nurse Clara Wood is working on Ellis Island, unable to face Manhattan, where the man she loved died in the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. While caring for an ill immigrant, she becomes intrigued by a name embroidered on his scarf. In 2011, Taryn Michaels is a widow running a fabric shop on the Upper West Side, and her husband died when the Twin Towers fell. When an old photograph resurfaces, she is forced to relive that day.
It’s a gentle, thoughtful novel about loss, healing, and the way love is passed from one life to another. It deals with real tragedy, but it handles it with compassion and ends on hope.
