Scrooge is a wonderful character. Made even more wonderful by starting out to be so evil, if evil is the word. Perhaps the term "damaged" applies better. Yes, I believe "A Christmas Carol" is more a story of healing than of conversion from evil to good. And I think we all relate to Scrooge because each of us has our own damage.
